When I was a kid, crayons and fingerpaint were my picture-making tools of choice. Today, I have a fancy computer (custom-built by yours truly) to make my pictures. The output has changed (I was a kid after all), but the goal remains the same: make something look good. That's a bit oversimplified, sure. But that's the ultimate intent of a graphic designer.
